Leading fancy Cracksman not among Gosden St Leger entries

Cracksman has not been entered for the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster in September, for which he had been second favourite at between 5-1 and 9-1.

The Derby third and Irish Derby runner-up is being targeted at the Group 2 Betway Great Voltigeur Stakes at York next month, a recognised trial for the world's oldest Classic, but his campaign could end there.

Cracksman finished a gallant second to St Leger market leader Capri in the Irish Derby at the Curragh, but if the duo are to meet again it will not be at Town Moor.

Gosden said: "We've entered seven in the St Leger but Cracksman isn't one of them.

"The seven are Stradivarius, Khalidi, Glencadam Glory, Zenon, Master Singer, Pouvoir Magique and the filly Coronet.

"Some have entries at Goodwood next week, after which we'll know a bit more about their chances of lining up at Doncaster."

Gosden has won the St Leger four times before with Shantou (1996), Lucarno (2007), Arctic Cosmos (2010) and Masked Marvel (2011). In the absence of Cracksman, Queen's Vase winner Stradivarius and the Ribblesdale winner Coronet are the trainer's leading prospects at this stage, according to bookmakers, with the duo around the 10-1 mark.

Capri's trainer Aidan O'Brien is responsible for 18 of the 45 entries for the £700,000 contest.

Joseph O'Brien, trainer of Rekindling, is bidding to become the first person since Harry Wragg in 1969 to both ride and train a winner of the St Leger. O'Brien partnered 2013 winner Leading Light.
