Online betting operators warned not to gamble with 'irresponsible behaviour'

Online gambling firms have been told the industry regulator will step in immediately if it sees signs of "irresponsible behaviour" as the sector tries to adapt to the shutdown of mainstream sporting action.

The Gambling Commission's warning was made as the industry comes under increasingly close scrutiny as operators offer odds on more obscure sporting events such as table tennis and Belarusian football, as well as casino and poker products, to make up the shortfall from the loss of horseracing, Premier League football and other major betting sports.

In response, industry body the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) said the warning from the regulator had been heard "loud and clear".
