Cobden sidelined with broken collarbone after Newton Abbot fall

Harry Cobden, who rode 63 winners last season on his way to being crowned champion conditional, faces a short spell on the sidelines after breaking his collarbone in a fall at Newton Abbot on Monday.

The young jockey suffered the injury when Paladin departed at the fifth flight of the 2m1f handicap hurdle, but expects to resume by the end of the month.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever broken anything and it came as a bit of a shock to the system,” said Cobden.

“Fortunately it’s a clean break and the bones are almost touching already. It could have been a lot worse.”

Cobden, who was given plenty of opportunities last season by his boss Paul Nicholls, had made a pleasing start to the new campaign, his winners including a high-profile one aboard Tempestatefloresco in Uttoxeter’s Listed Summer Cup for Colin Tizzard last month.

“That’s been the highlight so far,” added Cobden. “It was nice to get a big one in the bag during the summer, and now I can’t wait for the jumps season proper to begin in the autumn."
