Champion jockey-elect William Buick in matchless form with six of the best

The Racing Post's awards honour the best (and sometimes worst) performances and raise talking points from the last seven days of racing. This week's winners are . . .

Jockey of the week

William Buick

There is simply no stopping him.

The champion jockey-in-waiting was in peerless form at Newmarket on Future Champions weekend with a cracking six winners over the two days, five of which came for his Godolphin boss Charlie Appleby and the other in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes on Pogo for Charlie Hills.

After adding another at Goodwood on Sunday, his tally of 156 winners is more than 60 clear of nearest title challenger Hollie Doyle and higher than the winning total in six of the seven years since the championship was shortened to its Guineas-Champions Day timeframe in 2015.

Good luck to anyone trying to wrest the title away next year.

Debut of the week

Liberty Lane

Nottingham has seen its fair share of impressive debutants and Liberty Lane could be another aftera sparkling first outing on Wednesday.

Strong market support saw the Karl Burke-trained colt start 9-4 favourite and he made those odds look very generous with an effortless five-length victory over a choicely bred Ralph Beckett performer.

Liberty Lane could make a smart middle-distance prospect for next year, although given he was sired by Teofilo – who counts Gold Cup hero Subjectivist and Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment among his progeny – staying trips could be where he's seen at his best.

Trainer of the week

Chris Gordon

No trainer is in better form as the jumps season revs up than Chris Gordon, who struck with four of his seven runners in the week, including a double on the opening afternoon of Chepstow's two-day fixture.

Press Your Luck, who impressed over hurdles last season, made a very pleasing first start over fences when easily winning on Friday and could be one to follow as the season progresses.

He joined stablemates Kayf Legend, Mount Bonete and Presenting A Queen in the winner's enclosure, while Lord Baddesley put up a valiant effort when finishing second to Knappers Hill in the Silver Trophy at Chepstow on Saturday.

Ride of the week

Billy Lee on Are We Dreaming

While Buick has turned Britain's champion Flat jockey title race into a procession, the Irish equivalent looks set to go to the wire and Billy Lee landed a crucial blow with a peach of a ride on Are We Dreaming at the Curragh on Saturday.

Lee leads the defending champion Colin Keane by one winner and he was at his absolute best on this Willie McCreery-trained 20-1 chance, treading a path of his own on the far side away from his 12 rivals.

He judged the pace perfectly and nobody could get near the three-year-old filly as the field converged near the line, with the winning trainer hailing Lee's ride as "inspired".

Overdue winner of the week

Robert Havlin

For someone who has been such a crucial cog in the Gosden winning machine over so many years, it was an oddity that Robert Havlin had yet to ride a Group 1 winner. That wrong was righted in the Fillies' Mile on Friday.

Havlin was made to work for it, with his odds-on favourite Commissioning momentarily looking in trouble against the front-running Novakai before finding her stride on the rising ground and hitting the line strongly, in what looked a good sign for next year's 1,000 Guineas.
