Did chatty Byrnes put us all on to a winner in his moment of Newmarket glory?
Charles Byrnes has long been known as a man capable of winning a handicap and perhaps landing a gamble along the way, but is he any good as a tipster? In the wake of Saturday's Cesarewitch success with Run For Oscar, the County Limerick trainer was in unusually loquacious mood and pointed towards what may be the seven-year-old's next win.
"He's also on a nice mark over hurdles," Byrnes said after watching his horse beat 20 rivals by just over three lengths. "My son could ride him and take off 7lb. There's a race at Haydock that jumps into my mind straight away . . ."
Run For Oscar hasn't been tried over hurdles since finishing down the field in a Grade 2 at Wetherby last October. Can Byrnes be right about his future? It's got to be worth sticking him in the tracker to find out, although I notice the trainer added the dreaded words: "Whatever he does after today is a bonus." Perhaps it had just been the euphoria talking.
