Local councils have claimed research carried out for the Responsible Gambling Trust backs up their demands that they be given extra powers over betting shops and that the number of gaming machine stakes should be dramatically reduced.

The claims, disputed by betting industry representatives, come before a meeting on Wednesday between government and representatives of the Local Government Association (LGA) and Newham Council to discuss the latter's proposal under the Sustainable Communities Act to slash the maximum stakes on gaming machines, also known as FOBTs.

The LGA has claimed that rates of problem gambling are higher in areas with clusters of betting shops, based on analysis of betting shop loyalty card holders.
