Buick gets green light to return to action on Blue Point

William Buick will make his return to riding at Ascot on Saturday when he partners Blue Point in the Group 3 John Guest Bengough Stakes (3.00).

Buick has been out of action since August 12 after suffering a fractured T12 vertebra in a fall that resulted in the fatal injury of the Mark Johnston-trained Permian in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington.

The jockey has been riding out in Newmarket in recent days as he battled to be back to full fitness in time for Qipco British Champions Day on October 21 and won his race after securing the all-clear from his specialist on Wednesday evening.

"He got all the relevant paperwork done which allowed him to be declared to ride Blue Point," said the horse's trainer, Charlie Appleby.

"He's been riding out for a week or so now and has been itching to get back. He's been feeling great for some time but has been off under the doctor's orders waiting for the green light."

Appleby also praised the role James Doyle has played while Buick has been injured in steering horses such as Wild Illusion to victory in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Chantilly last Sunday.

"We're very lucky to have had James here while William has been on the sidelines," said Appleby. "James has done a fantastic job and I'm sure he'll continue doing so."
