Former lead horse transformed into big-race winner

The horses Of the nine runners, three had Classic victories to their name. Sodium had won the previous year's Irish Derby and St Leger, Appiani the Derby Italiano, and Fleet that season's 1,000 Guineas. Great Nephew was a classy miler, while Busted (stablemate of Fleet) had been brought over from Ireland to act as lead horse for Derby winner Royal Palace, a plan that was hastily shelved when the four-year-old began showing great improvement on the gallops.
The people Australian rider George Moore, stable jockey to nine-time champion and training titan Noel Murless (Fleet, Busted), won countless major races at home as well as a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on his travels; his son Gary would also ride an Arc winner. Bill Rickaby (Fleet), cousin of Lester Piggott, was 50 years old and a year from retirement. Etienne Pollet (Great Nephew) had trained Sea-Bird, and jockey Jean Deforge had been champion twice in France.
