BHA hopes for better understanding from participants as rules rewritten

The rules of racing have been rewritten by the BHA in an attempt to make them easier to understand and to close certain loopholes in the wording.

Much of the rewriting process, undertaken by Northridge Law LLP, has been focused on the presentation and structure of the rules with racing’s participants, at times, struggling to understand and interpret them.

However, there have been simplifications of the inside information rules that prohibits the passing of inside information outside of those who own, train or care for the horse even without reward or benefit in kind.

Amended rules relating to horse welfare, so that a ‘responsible person’ rather than just a trainer can be held accountable, and the use of speed sensors have also been included.

The rewritten rules do not come into force until September 1 but are available to view at newrules.britishhorseracing.com, providing time for additional changes to be made following feedback from stakeholders.

Any subsequent rule changes, including any that may arise from the ongoing review of the BHA’s anti-doping rules, will be announced separately.
