Three horses with a chance in the Ultima Handicap Chase

Derek Fox delivered one of the most memorable Cheltenham Festival rides with victory on Corach Rambler in this race last year, coming from last to first, getting up on the run-in.

He put a underwhelming reappearance behind him when fourth in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, and arrives here rated just 6lb higher than last year.

Don’t let that fool you, however, as last year’s victory came when carrying just 10st 2lb, whereas he competes off almost a stone higher this time around but his course and distance prowess is a string to his bow.

Like Corach Rambler, Oscar Elite ran in last year’s race as a novice, and he looked to have a mighty chance turning for home before finishing third after being gunned down late on.

His three efforts before the new year were disappointing, his best effort being fifth of six in the West Yorkshire Hurdle at Wetherby on reappearance in October.

However, he returned to form when taking the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase at Ascot with two in-form horses behind him, which sets him up nicely to go two better than last year.

With five wins and a second from his last six starts, Into Overdrive couldn’t come into the race in better form and looked very good when landing a tough-looking Rowland Meyrick from Sounds Russian last time.

The runner-up filled the same position on his next start in the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase behind Ahoy Senor, with Noble Yeats and Protektorat in third and fourth.

The top four are all heading for the Gold Cup on the Friday at the Cheltenham Festival, which should give Into Overdrive supporters confidence there could be more to come.
