2021 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe: where have the key Longchamp fancies been drawn?

Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Adayar has been drawn in stall 11 for Sunday's €5 million spectacular, close to dual Classic winner Snowfall in nine.

Two more of the leading players, Hurricane Lane and Tarnawa, are housed next door to one another in stalls two and three, leading Paddy Power to cut the Dermot Weld-trained mare into clear 5-2 favourite at the expense of Adayar.

Paddy Power Spokesman Paul Binfield said: "The draw has finally allowed us to separate Tarnawa and Adayar at the head of the market with the former's three berth meaning she's now clear favourite with Adayar eased out a fraction due to a seemingly unfavourable stall 11."

Whether Christophe Soumillon will want to exploit stall three aboard a confirmed hold-up horse in Tarnawa is one of the more interesting tactical elements of the race.

The presence of the cutaway 'open-stretch rail' up the home straight may give the dual Arc-winning jockey the confidence to hold a place on the rail further back in the field.

Hurricane Lane was ridden prominently on his previous visit to Longchamp when storming to a six length success in the Grand Prix de Paris and James Doyle for one will be relieved at having been handed an inner berth in three.

In 2018 Doyle had to plot a path from stall 15 aboard Sea Of Class and narrowly failed to reel in Enable, who had the luxury of breaking from stall six.

One of the expected pace angles in the race, Deep Bond, is also drawn towards the inside in stall five but fellow Japanese challenger Chrono Genesis must make her way home from an outside berth in 14.

The draw has been pretty kind to the most successful jockey in Arc history, six-time winner Frankie Dettori, after Love was handed stall four.

Among the debutant jockeys in the race there won't be too many complaints, with Rossa Ryan housed in stall one aboard St Leger runner-up Mojo Star, while Tom Marquand and Alenquer will break from stall eight. Rene Piecheluk is the third first-timer and is in 12 aboard the German-trained Torquator Tasso.

2021 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe declarations: confirmed runners

Just four of the 15-strong field are trained in France and while Bubble Gift and Gerald Mosse have drawn 'lucky' stall six – Hurricane Run, Sea The Stars, Solemia and Enable have all won from that gate in the last 16 editions – his three compatriots are all in double-figure stalls, with Sealiway in ten, Baby Rider breaking from 13 and Raabihah widest of all in 15.

Soft ground could even the playing field

Longchamp's mile and a half bestows an advantage to those drawn low, especially on good ground.

The history of the Arc tells a different story when the ground gets soft, very soft or heavy, one of which will almost certainly be the going description if the forecast weekend rain arrives.

Of the eight Arcs since 1995 run at Longchamp in testing conditions that featured 13 or more runners, three were won by horses drawn in double-figure stalls, while another three were won from a single-figure draw of seven or higher.
