Amateur Skehan escapes serious injury after Ludlow tumble

The air ambulance was called to Ludlow on Tuesday evening after amateur Damien Skehan was injured in the 2m5f handicap hurdle on the card when his mount Hazamar clipped heels and fell on the home turn bringing down Richard Patrick on Ring Eye.

Although the rider was brought back to the course first aid room and the air ambulance landed, the course medical staff decided he wasn't an emergency and instead sent him to hospital in Hereford by road.

Clerk of the course Simon Sherwood said: "In the end we didn't need the helicopter. He had been wasting and had been in the sauna and was basically dehydrated.

"He had also complained of pain in his ribs and the doctors were being cautious. He seemed much better so instead they sent him by road to hospital for a check up as a precaution."

Skehan, who has partnered two winners, was having his first ride of the season and his eighth in all.

Despite the arrival of the helicopter the final two races were each delayed by only a couple of minutes.

The feature of the meeting was a double for trainer Nicky Henderson with his Monbeg Legend jumping particularly well on his way to making a winning debut over fences in the novice handicap chase under Nico de Boinville and Lust For Glory, who was bought for £240,000 after winning her sole point-to-point, confirming the promise of her Ascot debut by taking the mares' bumper.

Henderson was quick to praise Sherwood and his team for the excellent ground they produced.
