11-year-old Jack completes second marathon walk for IJF
Aspiring jockey Jack Lander completed his latest fundraising challenge on Monday as he and his fellow walkers, including jump jockeys Andrew Thornton and Henry Brooke, reached the end of an amazing 172-mile journey between Newmarket and Malton.
Jack, 11, set off from the Rowley Mile on July 23 and completed around 20 miles of walking a day. He reached Jack Berry House at around lunchtime and announced his arrival by cutting a stretch of red tape in front of the entrance.
"The total distance turned out to be 172 miles, which I was thrilled with," said Jack outside his final destination. "Thank you to everyone who supported me, donated and phoned me. All of that's been great.
Jack, from Halesowen just outside Birmingham, hopes to be a jump jockey and first embarked on a fundraising walk two years ago, when he walked the 60 miles between Stratford Racecourse and Oaksey House in Lambourn, a distance he nearly tripled on his latest walk.
Thoughts of rest were only secondary to Jack, who signed off by saying: "It's time to plan my next challenge!"
Jack's walk was completed in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare. He had raised just over £7,500 on Monday afternoon. There is still time to support Jack's efforts and donations can be made through this website.
