The Punt Acca: Charlie Huggins' three horse racing tips at Doncaster on Friday

Three horses to add to a treble on Friday . . .

William Cody (1.35 Doncaster)

Progressive chaser who is yet to finish outside the first two in four starts over fences, winning two of them. Upped 9lb for a comfortable success at Huntingdon on Boxing Day but looks good value for that rise as Smoking Pigeon, who was more than 12 lengths behind in third, won on his next start. William Cody’s trainer Pam Sly is 1-1 at Doncaster this season and her six-year-old looks to have more improvement in him than his more exposed older rivals.

Before Midnight (3.15 Doncaster)

Back down to his last winning mark of 144 which is 4lb lower than what he ran off when second to subsequent Champion Chase runner-up Funambule Sivola in this race last year. He gets his favoured good ground here, and a return to a left-handed track with Sam Twiston-Davies back on board should see the Sam Thomas-trained ten-year-old go very close.

Starlyte (3.45 Doncaster)

Made a winning stable debut under Patrick Wadge for Lucinda Russell at Newcastle in November after failing to win on the Flat for Linda Perratt. That victory came over 2m4½f with Wadge taking 10lb off and although the rider is only able to claim 7lb off the six-year-old’s 5lb higher mark, there is reason to believe Starlyte can cope with her revised rating as she’s upped in trip. Starlyte was nearly 30 lengths ahead of the 138-rated hurdler Shearer when third behind City Chief and Hidden Heroics (now rated 135 and 137 over fences) in an Ayr novice handicap hurdle over 3m½f when with Ian Williams last April. Therefore, her mark of 109 still looks winnable and she finally gets her ground here having been taken out of a soft ground race at Musselburgh on New Year’s Day.
