Neon Moon

Any number of horses could be ahead of their marks in Taunton's richly competitive 2m½f handicap hurdle (2.50).

Bold Reaction was spoken of quite highly in Nicky Henderson's Racing Post stable tour and ran well on his return at Doncaster in December, the Paul Nicholls-trained Beny Nahar Road is well treated on his Flat exploits and handicap debutant Inoui Machin is on a potentially good mark.

However, Three Cliffs Bay might be a bigger price than all of those and brings just as much potential to the table on his first start in a handicap for Evan Williams.

The six-year-old showed nothing on his debut over hurdles in October, but took a huge step forward next time when he capitalised on a bad final-flight error from Steel Ally to notch a 25-1 success at Ffos Las.

Steel Ally bolted up by six lengths last week to enhance the form and, even without that mistake, I suspect it would have been a fairly close-run thing with Three Cliffs Bay.

The selection then tried to follow up under a penalty in a 2m4f novice hurdle at that track, but didn't get home on the testing conditions after travelling well for a long way.

In any case he was clearly up against it off the same terms as The Jukebox Man, a strong stayer at the trip who is now rated 136 after going close in the Grade 1 Challow Novices' Hurdle.

Three Cliffs Bay might find this test sharp enough as he drops back in distance, but there should be plenty of pace in the race and an opening mark of 113 undersells his talent.

Next up at Taunton is a 2m2f novice handicap chase (3.20) and Merry Monty is taken to break his maiden at the 11th attempt for trainer Chris Down, who is enjoying a good season.

The market has spoken favourably for Merry Monty in recent outings and while he is yet to justify that support, it is surely only a matter of time before he does.

The seven-year-old was turned over at odds of 11-10 two starts back, simply bumping into one when beating everything else fair and square, and he produced a even better effort on his chasing debut on New Year's Day, staying on powerfully to get within a length of subsequent five-length winner Bolsover Bill.

Merry Monty has two Racing Post Ratings of 93 in bumpers on his CV, so it is a surprise he still finds himself rated in the lows 80s, and he might not face a horse with the same handicapping potential over fences on his second run in this discipline. Quicker ground might also eke out further progress.

The final play at Taunton is Neon Moon in a competitive 2m7f handicap chase (4.20) as a few of his rivals have stamina doubts.

Neon Moon would have landed this last season if he didn't idle so badly on the run-in after possibly being sent for home too early, and he will find this calibre of opponent easier to handle than the various high-class sorts he has met on recent outings in better company.

He is feasibly treated off 2lb higher than for his runaway success over 3m at Ludlow in October and should go well if ridden with more restraint than he was when throwing away the victory in the previous running.

The 3m handicap chase at Market Rasen (3.35) is another tricky puzzle to solve. I always favour lightly raced sorts who have shaped with some promise in contests like this and Inflexible makes the most appeal for Tom George.

Inflexible was purchased with staying chases in mind and has improved his RPRs a good chunk in all three starts over fences, looking better the further he has stretched out in distance.

His strong-staying Hereford second over 3m1f last time behind Shot Boii, who has done the form little harm since, represented his best show of jumping and I'm confident he can strike in this sphere soon. He can overcome a 3lb rise from the encouraging Hereford display.
