Hong Kong racing tips: JA McGrath with three fancies for Happy Valley's card

The Rock
1.15 Happy Valley
2pts win

Moonluck
2.15 Happy Valley
2pts win

Amazing News
3.50 Happy Valley
2pts win

Caspar Fownes landed the equivalent of a knockout punch on rival John Size when sending out a five-timer at the weekend to all but take off with the trainers’ championship trophy under his arm.

Further good news for Fownes followers is that with seven meetings of the season remaining, he reckons he still has a string of potential winners lined up, and surely The Rock, in the Class 2 1m½f Bowen Handicap (1.15) at Happy Valley, must be top of the list.

The Rock showed promise when winning a mile Windsor novice for Clive Cox two years ago, and Fownes has the five-year-old thriving on his racing, having given him plenty of time to acclimatise and realise his potential.

The reward has been three wins this season, and from an attractive inside draw (three), the son of Dutch Art can go in again.

The Rock should enjoy the run of the race under Chad Schofield, and being out of a Pivotal mare, the likelihood of rain-softened ground is not a concern. The Size-trained Savaquin, a steady improver, is the danger.

Fownes saddles nine runners at the meeting, and another likely winner is Amazing News in the Class 3 6f handicap (3.50), in which the four-year-old faces 11 rivals.

Amazing News, by Toronado, won two races over 7f for George Scott prior to export, but his last two 6f runs at Happy Valley for Fownes were very good. With a decent pace likely, it should suit a strong finisher.

Here Comes Ted has been placed in this grade on his last two starts and, still lurking at the bottom of the handicap with Joao Moreira back in the saddle, he is a must for forecasts.

Zac Purton trails Moreira 119-144 in the title battle but he continues to ride well, and Moonluck in the Class 4 1m½f handicap (2.15) should be another winner for him. The step up in trip will suit the four-year-old.
