Tournament preview

Sofia Kenin has been competitive in much deeper events than her latest test in Tianjin and the American youngster should justify top-seed billing.

The 20-year-old, who won a similar event in Guangzhou at the back end of last month, has since enjoyed runs to the last-16 in classy contests in Wuhan and Beijing.

In Wuhan, Kenin outclassed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elise Mertens before bumping into Australian powerhouse Ashleigh Barty, while her Beijing adventure was stopped in three sets by Elina Svitlona following wins over Garbine Muguruza and Pavlyuchenkova.

Barty is world number one with Svitolina ranked three and there is nobody lurking in this field who matches their lofty standards.

Kenin also has a nice draw to work with.

She opens up against limited compatriot Kristie Ahn, with fellow American Jennifer Brady a potential second-round opponent.

Defending champion Caroline Garcia and Venus Williams look the biggest obstacles in the top half of the draw but the French ace is in worse shape than 12 months ago and fading force Venus opens up against talented Swede Rebecca Peterson.

The bottom half is less competitive with the chances of home hope Qiang Wang preferred to Daria Yastremska.

Neither, however, would be fancied to spring a surprise on rising star Kenin were they to meet her in the final.
