Tournament preview

Iga Swiatek could give punters a run for their money in the WTA Qatar Open, a Premier Five tournament which starts on Sunday.

The Pole looks a seriously useful performer and she again advertised her talent in the Australian Open last month when reaching the last 16 of the first major of the season.

That effort should have provided Swiatek with a confidence boost for the campaign ahead and with Doha offering promising youngsters the opportunity to go deep into the week, some of the market leaders' quotes could be on the short side.

Swiatek, ranked 49th in the world, has already been trimmed from 100-1 to 80-1 for the Qatar title and that's not surprising after she defeated Timea Babos, Carla Suarez Navarro and Donna Vekic in Melbourne before being pipped in three close sets by in-form Anett Kontaveit.

The selection has since had a solitary Fed Cup outing and Swiatek should be fresh and raring to go after a decent break.

Top seeds Ash Barty and Simona Halep merit plenty of respect - Halep played some fine tennis in Dubai last week - but the busy Romanian may struggle to maintain that level in Doha.

Swiatek opens with a tough outing against Aryna Sabalenka, but if she can find a way past the powerful Belarusian her price will tumble.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina could also be a danger, but the Ukrainian did not look on top of her game in Dubai, where she has tended to shine in the past.
