Tournament preview

The two dominant forces in women's tennis this year - Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur - are not present at this week's Guadalajara Open, but in their absence a super competitive field has assembled in Mexico.

It's 11-1 the field for the final WTA 1000 event of the season and ninth seed Barbora Krejcikova could be the one to be on.

An elite-class doubles player - Krejcikova won three of the four doubles Grand Slams this year - the Czech has also established herself in the singles game over the last two years, winning the French Open title last year.

Currently ranked 14th, Krejcikova arrives in peak form having taken back-to-back titles in Tallinn and Ostrava. In that most recent win on home turf she handed Swiatek her first defeat in a final since 2019. While that was a draining and emotional affair, she sat out last week and arrives in Mexico fresh and confident.

Top seed Paula Badosa's form has gone off the rails recently, while teen star Coco Gauff was hammered by Swiatek in the San Diego quarter-finals just a few days ago.

Stefanos Tsitsipas unsurprisingly found Novak Djokovic too good in the final of the Astana Open a week ago, but the Greek is favourite to make amends in this week's Stockholm Open.

However, third seed Frances Tiafoe could be the value given his recent form.

The American was edged out by champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set marathon US Open semi-final before beating Tsitsipas in the decisive Laver Cup rubber in London.

He missed out on the Japan Open title in two tie-breaks against Taylor Fritz last time out and should be hungry to prove himself having lost his last four finals.
