Tournament preview

The year-closing celebration that is the WTA Finals is back on the tennis calendar after last season’s Covid-caused cancellation and a competitive field of eight has made it a tricky heat for punters.

With world number one Ashleigh Barty opting out of the defence of her crown, a new name will be carved on the trophy in an event that has switched venue from Shenzhen to Guadalajara, Mexico and features six debutants.

Only Karolina Pliskova (four previous appearances) and Garbine Muguruza (three), who are both housed in Group Teotihuacan, have felt the WTA Finals pressure before.

But, while experience may be beneficial, Pliskova still awaits a first title of 2021 while the inconsistent Muguruza has never been the most reliable betting proposition and is regularly battling injury.

Therefore, targeting that section could be a profitable exercise for punters and it is the in-form Anett Kontaveit who is taken to continue her hot streak.

The Estonian has sparked into life recently and only cemented her place in the year-end event at the final opportunity with last month’s triumph at the Transylvania Open, helping her leapfrog Ons Jabeur.

Kontaveit has risen from 28th in the WTA rankings at the end of July to eighth and has won four titles from her last six starts.

The 25-year-old is playing with flair and confidence and since losing to Jabuer in the middle of August, has compiled a win-loss record of 26-2.

With Guadalajara around 5,000 feet above sea level, altitude is a factor and courts may play slower, but there appears to be little that can deter Kontaveit at present.

Opening assignment Barbora Krejcikova may be her biggest test, but a place in the semi-finals should be at her mercy before she illustrates her class.

Group Chichen Itza features world number two Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, Iga Swiatek and Paula Badosa, and it is Polish star Swiatek who may represent the value to top that section.
