It has been an extraordinary season for Iga Swiatek and the prolific Pole can cap a memorable year by claiming the WTA Finals crown.

The WTA showpiece takes place in Fort Worth, Texas, after a 17-year absence from the USA and Swiatek arrives refreshed after a couple of weeks off since winning the San Diego Open.

The 21-year-old’s rivals in her round-robin group are home hope Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina.

Swiatek thrashed Gauff 6-0 6-3 in the San Diego quarter-finals, while Garcia arrives in poor form and Kasatkina hasn’t won two matches in a row since claiming the Granby Championship title in August.

It has been a long road to the top for Jessica Pegula, who is sure to get plenty of support from the American crowd.

She took Swiatek to three sets in the semi-finals in San Diego and followed that up by winning the Guadalajara title.

Second seed Ons Jabeur’s form is trending in the wrong direction, and while Aryna Sabalenka has a winning record against all of her group opponents, her wildly inconsistent form makes her price look skinny enough.

Maria Sakkari was a semi-finalist in the WTA Finals last year and is beginning to recover her form after a slump. The Greek is potentially overpriced but was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Pegula in the Guadalajara final just a week ago.

The group winners play the runners-up from the other group in the semi-finals.

And while it’s tempting to try to find an each-way alternative to take Swiatek on with, there is far more to recommend the world number one than any of her rivals.
