Petra Martic impressed on her way to the last eight at this month’s French Open and her purple patch can continue with a quarter-final victory over Jelena Ostapenko at the WTA Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham.

A deep run in a Grand Slam event has been long overdue for Martic but she claimed some big scalps at Roland Garros and wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Margarita Gasparyan in Edgbaston suggest she could be in the form of her life.

More is required against Ostapenko, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last season, but her young Latvian opponent is a frustrating player who concedes too many cheap points on her serve.

She made eight double faults in her straight-sets win over Brit Johanna Konta on Wednesday and a resilient Martic is unlikely to be so generous.
