WTA Citi Open: betting preview, second-round tips & where to watch
Talented Caty McNally ready to claim a place in Washington quarter-finals
TV: BT Sport 2, 7pm Thursday
US women's tennis looks in a healthy place following the emergence of 15-year-old Cori Gauff but her friend and doubles partner Caty McNally, who is two years Gauff's senior, could also be on the verge of an excellent career.
McNally, who was beaten by Gauff in the 2018 French Open junior final, faces Christina McHale in the second round of the WTA Citi Open and looks to have every chance of beating her more experienced compatriot and advancing to the quarter-finals.
The 17-year-old was an easy 6-4 6-2 winner over Chinese player Lin Zhu in the opening round and she is no stranger to victories over more seasoned performers having won the valuable Midland ITF event in February where she beat five players who have been ranked in the WTA's top 100 at some stage in their careers.
McHale is a former top-30 player but the New Jersey native has done little of note this season and could be outplayed by a youngster who looks likely to crack the top 100 sooner rather than later.
