There are some intriguing third-round clashes taking place in Beijing, none more so than Sofia Kenin’s showdown with Elina Svitolina.

Bookmakers prefer the chances of the American youngster but Svitolina, 13 places better off in the world rankings, should perhaps be favourite.

The Ukrainian ace has made the semi-finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open this season and she can outclass Kenin, who required a deciding set to see off an out-of-sorts Garbine Muguruza in the opening round.

Petra Kvitova should justify odds-on quotes against Belinda Bencic, but fellow seed Kiki Bertens may find things tougher in her duel with Angelique Kerber's conqueror Polona Hercog.
