Bookmakers are taking no chances with Britain’s history-maker Emma Raducanu, who has been installed as favourite to follow up her US Open heroics with victory in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where the women's main draw starts on Wednesday.

The teenage sensation sprang a 400-1 surprise in only her second appearance in a Grand Slam, winning all ten of her New York City assignments in straight sets.

There appeared to be no fluke about that breakthrough success and while it would be no shock to see the 18-year-old justify market expectations in the California desert in the coming week and a half, there is better value to be had in a competition brimming with quality.

Raducanu has landed in a tricky quarter packed with experience featuring Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka and Elina Svitolina, so things don't look easy for her.

With Karolina Pliskova, Garbine Muguruza, Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur and Barbora Krejcikova all locking horns in the top half of the draw, the door may be ajar for second seed Iga Swiatek.

The 20-year-old Pole won the French Open last year and has also claimed two titles this season, winning on hard terrain in Adelaide in February before landing the Italian Open on clay in May.

Swiatek may be at her optimum on the slow red courts but there is little wrong with her game on a faster surface and there was enough promise in her run to the semi-final in Ostrava last time out to suggest she can capitalise on what looks a decent draw.
