Tournament preview

It's open house in the WTA Abu Dhabi Open, the first women's tournament of the new year, and while the trophy will probably go to one of the market-leaders there could be value in having an outright pop on a couple of viable outsiders in the betting.

Sofia Kenin tops the bill on the Zayed Sports City hard courts after her Australian Open triumph and French Open runner-up efforts last year. The American is often keen to play when others aren't so she merits respect, but Kenin will know the importance of saving some energy in the lead-up to her Melbourne Park title defence early next month.

Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka and Garbine Muguruza are next in the rankings, but while all would be difficult to stop at their peak there could be better value in young longshots Leylah Fernandez and Anastasia Potapova after some promising performances last season.

Fernandez, 18, should have beaten Petra Kvitova in the French Open in early October and the talented Canadian, runner-up to Heather Watson in Acapulco last February, has a hugely exciting future in top-level tennis.

Potapova, one year older than Fernandez, made finals in Moscow and Tashkent in 2018. Ankle surgery last year put her career on hold, but she could bounce back in style this season.
