Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are back in action in the US Open on day five and it will be interesting to see how Djokovic manages his shoulder injury in his third-round outing against Denis Kudla.

The American tends to be underrated a shade by the oddsmakers and if the world number one is lacking in any way, it's possible that Kudla could fare better than some anticipate.

Alternatively, punters also need to bear in mind that Djokovic could experience less trouble with the shoulder than he had in his straight-sets victory over Juan Ignacio Londero.

Federer takes on British battler Dan Evans, who has saved his best hard-court form of the summer for Flushing Meadows.

Federer dropped the opening set in his first two outings against Sumit Nagal and Damir Dzumhur. He will be aware of the need to tighten up against the spirited Evans, so it's difficult to predict if the Birmingham bulldog will win a set or not.

The best value of the day could lie elsewhere in matches that look potentially closer.

Dominik Koepfer v Nikoloz Basilashvili

Dominik Koepfer is turning a few heads in New York and the German has a chance to continue his US Open run when he meets Nikoloz Basilashvili for a place in the last 16.

However, Basilashvili has shown this season that when he's up for it, he can do the business - he retained his Hamburg clay crown last month - and it may not pay to underrate the Georgian.

Koepfer will still be a new name for many, but there was a lot to like about the way he dismissed big-serving Reilly Opelka in straight sets in round two.

He ought to be able to trouble Basilashvili in some way, but Koepfer may do well to finish off another opponent in double-quick time.

David Goffin looks to be playing at or near his peak judging by the way he thrashed Gregoire Barrere 6-2 6-2 6-2 in his latest singles outing at Flushing Meadows.

Pablo Carreno Busta, who Goffin meets next, is battling his way back to somewhere near his best, so while the Spaniard has a chance of triumphing, it could be close.

Goffin will do well to post another quick victory, so the best way of betting on this clash could be to back it to last for four or five sets.

Grigor Dimitrov is not taking apart opponents as often as he did in his younger days and lucky-loser Kamil Majchrzak is not without a shout of posing problems for the Bulgarian.

Williams dropped only two games in her curtain-raiser against Maria Sharapova, but where the Russian looks a waning force, Muchova is a coming presence who is set to climb further up the rankings.

Muchova packs a punch, but even that may not save her against Williams and the eighth seed could be a decent price to post a straight-sets triumph.

Sofia Kenin is going the right way and the American has a good temperament to boot.

She could make like difficult for her compatriot Madison Keys, who likes her creature comforts on court, and this could be a close battle.
