Richard Gasquet v Taro Daniel

Fresh from a run to the quarter-finals in the Winston-Salem, French veteran Richard Gasquet should have the beating of first-round opponent Taro Daniel. The Japanese player has lost five of his seven matches in August and has also been beaten in both previous encounters with Gasquet, who is a former semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows.

Aslan Karatsev v Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini and Aslan Karatsev are two supremely talented performers, but bringing their A-game consistently is usually the downfall. That said, Karatsev, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open last year, has the potential to up his level dramatically and recent signs have been more encouraging so expect him to come out on top.

Adrian Mannarino v Gijs Brouwer

Experienced Frenchman Adrian Mannarino continues to hold his form well at the age of 34 and he should be too streetwise for Gijs Brouwer. Mannarino secured silverware in Winston-Salem last week, dropping just one set across his six matches including in victories over Maxime Cressy, Botic van De Zandschulp and Laslo Djere.

Brandon Nakashima v Pavel Kotov

Brandon Nakashima shown his potential with a run to the last-16 at Wimbledon in July and the American can restore some confidence with victory over Pavel Kotov. Nakashima has lost his last three matches but the 21-year-old looks a future star and should outclass Kotov, who does most of his competing on the Challenger and Future Tours.

Dan Evans v Jiri Vesely

Dan Evans can be excused his first-round defeat in Cincinnati as that came just three days after his semi-final heroics in Montreal, and the Brit can bounce back to form against Jiri Vesely. Evans beat Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul on his way to the last four in Canada and should be too good for Jiri Vesely.

Amanda Anisimova v Yulia Putintseva

American youngster Amanda Anisimova looks a real talent and after her run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, she may fancy her chances of another long stay at her home Grand Slam. Anisimova withdrew from the competition in Cincinnati but that is likely to have been on a precautionary basis as she had defeated Daria Kasatkina in her opening game there. On all recent form, the 20-year-old looks too classy for Yulia Putintseva, who has suffered three straight-sets defeats on the spin.

Alison Van Uytvanck v Venus Williams

Fitness ought to prevail when Alison Van Uytvanck takes on 42-year-old veteran Venus Williams, who has played just three matches since 2021 and lost on each occasion. The Belgian has also been relatively inactive recently but Williams can’t match her old standards and may ultimately be outclassed.
