Jenson Brooksby v Carlos Alcaraz

Jenson Brooksby did well to record a straight-sets win over Cincinnati champion Borna Coric in the last round but the Croatian was evidently toiling from a busy schedule, so expect Carlos Alcaraz to have Brooksby's measure. The Spaniard, who was a US Open quarter-finalist on his debut last year, looks like a future Grand Slam champion and should showcase that here.

Brandon Nakashima v Jannik Sinner

These are two top talents but Jannik Sinner has done more in his career to date, with the 21-year-old already a six-time winner on the ATP Tour. The impressive Italian has made the quarter-final in two of the three Grand Slams this season and can tee-up another deep run with a third-round victory over Brandon Nakashima.

Denis Shapovalov v Andrey Rublev

Denis Shapovalov has not kicked on as many expected this season and he looks set to be outclassed by Andrey Rublev. Shapovalov needed a deciding set in his opener with Marc Huesler and then was a four-set winner against Roberto Carballes Baena, which leaves him vulnerable against the world number 11.

Karolina Pliskova v Belinda Bencic

Karolina Pliskova has an excellent record at the US Open and having brushed aside younger compatriot Marie Bouzkova 6-3 6-2 in the last round, should fancy her chances against Belinda Bencic. The Swiss seed is also a top player but three-set wins over Andrea Petkovic and Sorana Cirstea hint that she is there for the taking.

Alize Cornet v Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins beat Alize Cornet 7-5 6-1 in this season's Australian Open quarter-final and, spurred on by home support, the American can prevail again. Collins has been plagued by injuries but straight-set wins over Naomi Osaka and Cristina Bucsa suggest she is back operating close to her best.
