Cori 'Coco' Gauff pulled off a monumental comeback to beat Polona Hercog at Wimbledon last month and the American teenager was at it again at the US Open on Tuesday as she came back to defeat fellow young gun Anastasia Potapova.

Gauff lost the opening set 6-3 against the 18-year-old Russian, herself a junior champion, and was broken in the first game of the second set.

But the 15-year-old roared back to claim six of the next seven games to take it to a deciding set before breaking Potapova at 5-4 to claim a victory in front of a rapturous New York crowd.

Bookmakers make Gauff no bigger than 4-5 to beat Timea Babos in round two, potentially setting up a dream third-round clash with reigning champion Naomi Osaka after the Japanese player beat Anna Blinkova in three sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Gauff is 50-1 to win the title while out-of-sorts Osaka in 12-1 to mount a successful defence. Wimbledon champion Simona Halep is an 8-1 shot after she beat Nicole Gibbs but 2017 winner Sloane Stephens will not be regaining her crown – she lost in straight against Anna Kalinskaya.

Rafael Nadal made serene progress with a straight-sets victory over John Millman and was clipped into 3-1 for New York glory but there were plenty of high-profile first-round shocks in the men's draw as four top-ten players were knocked out.

Wimbledon semi-finalist Roberto Bautista Agut was beaten at odds of 1-11 by Mikhail Kukushkin before Andrey Rublev downed 8-15 shot Stefanos Tsitsipas in an intense four-setter.

Dominic Thiem was a 1-6 loser when he surrendered meekly against Thomas Fabbiano and Karen Khachanov was unable to justify odds of 1-8 against Vasek Pospisil.

Kyle Edmund, meanwhile, was on the receiving end of another upset as he was beaten at 1-5 against Pablo Andujar, leaving Dan Evans as the sole British representative in the men's draw. He takes on Lucas Pouille on Wednesday.
