Day four preview

US Open second seed Rafael Nadal suffered a minor scare when going a set down against Rinky Hijikata in his opening match in New York but recovered to win in four sets and the Spaniard takes on Fabio Fognini on Thursday.

British hopefuls Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie are also in action, facing James Duckworth and Joao Sousa, while in the women's tournament top seed Iga Swiatek locks horns with home talent Sloane Stephens.

James Duckworth v Dan Evans

British star Dan Evans was progressively more dominant in his US Open first-round clash against Jiri Vesely, winning 11 of the final 12 games in his straight-sets triumph.

Evans is playing in New York with the highest seeding (20) of his career and admitted he is enjoying being back in the USA after the heightened scrutiny at Wimbledon.

Having made the semi-finals of the ATP Montreal in August, his confidence is high right now and he should breeze past Australian James Duckworth, who was pushed close by unseeded compatriot Christopher O'Connell in his opener.

Borna Coric v Jenson Brooksby

Borna Coric was made to work for his place in the second round of the US Open, edging a five-set thriller with Enzo Couacaud, but he can gain some confidence with victory over home talent Jenson Brooksby.

Coric is an accomplished player on hard courts, having seen off Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime on his way to winning the Cincinnati Masters in August.

His best Grand Slam performance to date came at Flushing Meadows in 2020, when he reached the quarter-finals, and he is a decent selection at evens to defeat Brooksby, who had lost four of his five matches prior to the US Open.

Kaia Kanepi v Aryna Sabalenka

Sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka barely broke a sweat in her 6-1 6-3 victory over Catherine Harrison in the first round and should have few issues finding a way past Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

Sabalenka made the last four at Flushing Meadows last year and prepared for this year's tournament with a run to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters.

She has won in straight sets in three of her last five matches and is worth a bet to win 2-0 against out-of-form Kanepi.
