Petra Kvitova was the biggest early casualty on day four of the US Open with the tournament trying to get back on track after losing most of its third day to rain in New York.

Sixth seed Kvitova, who lost 6-4 6-4 to second-round opponent Andrea Petkovic, has struggled with an injury to her playing arm since making a bright start to the year with a run to the final of the Australian Open.

The problem, a tear in her forearm, has affected the Czech's campaign badly and any hopes she harboured of becoming world number one earlier in the season were soon dashed.

Twelfth seed Anastasija Sevastova ended the hopes of talented young Pole Iga Swiatek when fighting back from the loss of the opening set to win 3-6 6-1 6-3.

The Latvian number one will play 22nd seed Petra Martic in round three after the Croat outclassed Ana Bogdan 6-2 6-4.

Well-regarded American Sofia Kenin continued her impressive year with a 7-6 6-0 triumph over Laura Siegemund.

World number 20 Kenin will next meet her compatriot Madison Keys, seeded tenth in New York, for a place in the last 16.

In men's action, David Goffin hammered Gregoire Barrere 6-2 6-2 6-2 to charge into the last 32.
