Day eight preview

British tennis fans cannot contain their excitement about rising star Emma Raducanu, who is considered one of the brightest talents in the women’s game.

The 18-year-old reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in July on her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam and has repeated the trick in New York with straight-set wins over Stefanie Voegele, Shuai Zhang and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Raducanu is favourite to make the quarter-finals at the expense of home hope Shelby Rogers, but this is her toughest test to date and it may not be as straightforward as quotes of 4-6 suggest.

Novak Djokovic, who is best-priced 4-5 for US Open glory, is bidding to win all four Grand Slam titles in a single season and faces up-and-coming American Jenson Brooksby.

The standout tie in the men’s draw sees fourth seed and Olympic champion Alexander Zverev take on impressive Italian Jannik Sinner, who is the world number 15.

Belinda Bencic v Iga Swiatek

There are some tasty fourth-round ties taking place at Flushing Meadows on Monday, but Belinda Bencic’s showdown with Iga Swiatek could be the pick of the bunch.

Seventh seed Swiatek, who won the French Open as a teenager last year, is rated favourite by the layers, but it is the in-form Bencic who looks the most likely winner.

The Swiss star showed all her class as she claimed gold at the Olympics in Tokyo in July and she has continued in the same vein since heading Stateside.

Bencic reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati, defeating talented trio Marketa Vondrousova, Shelby Rogers and Karolina Muchova along the way, and has looked fully focused on the challenge in front of her in New York.

The 24-year-old has recorded straight-set wins over Arantxa Rus, Martina Trevisan and Jessica Pegula and she should have little to fear from Swiatek, who doesn’t appear to be operating to her maximum potential.

The Pole needed three sets to see off Fiona Ferro and Anett Kontaveit in the previous two rounds and will need to raise her game to beat Bencic, who was a semi-finalist on her last visit here in 2019.

Reilly Opelka v Lloyd Harris

Reilly Opelka can reach the quarter-finals of his home Grand Slam with victory over Lloyd Harris.

The big-serving American has fired down 85 aces in his three straight-set victories over Soonwoo Kwon, Lorenzo Musetti and Nikoloz Basilashvili and his serve should give him a significant advantage over his South African opponent.

Harris was one of the players Opelka beat on his way to the final of the Canadian Open last month and, backed by a vociferous home crowd, the American can confirm that form.

After that round-of-16 win, Opelka claimed the scalps of Roberto Bautista Agut and Stefanos Tsitsipas, highlighting what he is capable of on his favoured hard court.

The powerful Opelka should be too strong for Harris, who is ranked 22 places below him in the world rankings.
