Tuesday's preview

Felix Auger-Aliassime has long been touted as a player with immense potential but he has started to deliver in recent months and looks a worthy favourite to defeat Rafael Nadal in their Green Group encounter at the ATP Tour finals.

It is rare for Nadal to assume underdog status for any match but in this case it is entirely understandable as the Spanish legend looked rusty in Sunday's Turin opener, losing 7-6 6-1 to Taylor Fritz.

The 36-year-old has experienced injury problems and hasn't won a match since a fourth-round loss to Frances Tiafoe at the US Open.

Nadal returned to action at the Paris Masters, losing 6-3 6-7 1-6 to Tommy Paul, and while his fitness may have advanced over the last fortnight, his first Tour Finals outing suggests he's still off the pace.

Auger-Aliassime hadn't won a singles tournament before the start of the year, but he has bagged four in 2022, including victories in Florence, Antwerp and Basel since the start of October.

The Canadian suffered his own setback as he was beaten in straight sets by Casper Ruud on Sunday, but he still looks a genuine title contender and can pick up from his tardy opening loss with a second-match win.

Ruud was a semi-finalist on his tournament debut last year, and he can make it two wins from two in the tournament when he takes on Fritz.

The Norwegian has gone off the boil in recent months but he showed his quality this year with runner-up efforts at the French Open and the US Open.

Another big tournament could stimulate a response from Ruud, who accumulated valuable experience from this event in 2021 and may have a little too much knowhow for Fritz, who is making his ATP Tour finals debut and is not certain to repeat Sunday's heroics.
