Day three preview

Novak Djokovic put his best foot forward in his ATP Finals curtain-raiser against Matteo Berrettini and it looks as if the Serb means business in London this week.

Dominic Thiem, who meets Djokovic in their second group outing, has won three of the pair's last four meetings. But given that all of those came on clay, it may pay punters not to get too excited.

The oddsmakers think that beating Roger Federer in his O2 Arena opener doesn't mean Thiem will follow suit against the sport's finest hard-court exponent and they're probably right.

Some may consider that Thiem offers a shade of value at around the 4-1 mark, but the best way of punting on the match could be to get with Djokovic, who dropped just three games against Berrettini.

Djokovic is asked to give up 4.5 games on handicaps, but backing the title favourite to triumph in straight sets could be a better course of action.

Federer will look to bounce back from his 7-5 7-5 first-match setback against Thiem when he faces Berrettini in an afternoon clash.

The Swiss legend has been in this situation on more than the odd occasion in this competition and invariably finds a way back into the title reckoning.

It's likely Federer will make it one win in two matches, although given that he is aged 38 a Berrettini upset win cannot entirely be ruled out.
