World number two Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this week's Cincinnati Masters, citing fatigue following his crushing 6-3 6-0 victory over Daniil Medvedev to win the 83rd singles title of his career in Sunday's Rogers Cup.

The Spaniard had been 5-1 second favourite to win in Cincinnati behind Novak Djokovic and the number two seed's absence leaves an open look to the bottom half of the draw.

Two players in that section hoping to capitalise will be David Goffin and Taylor Fritz and the big-hitting American appeals as the one to side with in their first-round encounter.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed an excellent summer, capturing his first ATP title on the grass at Eastbourne and reaching back-to-back finals on the North American hard courts in Atlanta and Los Cabos.

The way Fritz dismantled world number 10 Fabio Fognini in straight sets in Mexico was particularly impressive and he's excused an early exit in Toronto last week as it's likely those recent exploits took their toll.

If he gets his serve working then Goffin, who has struggled for rhythm all season, could struggle to create opportunities.

Goffin has not won a match since Wimbledon after being dumped out by world number 77 Yoshihito Nishioka in Washington and a lack of confidence told as he blew seven break points in defeat to Guido Pella in Toronto.

The women's draw has also been depleted following the withdrawal of last week's champion, Bianca Andreescu, who captured the title in Canada following Serena Williams' retirement in the final.

Note: An earlier edition of this article included a preview for Daria Kasatkina against Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova has subsequently withdrawn from the tournament, and Kasatkina will face 'lucky loser' Barbora Strycova instead.
