Frances Tiafoe is an inconsistent performer but he has recorded some eye-catching results this season and is likely to outplay Jordan Thompson to reach the quarter-finals of the Libema Open.

The American, who made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the Miami Masters earlier this year, will be happy to see the back of the clay season, even if he did manage to reach the quarter-finals in Estoril and the last 16 in Madrid.

Tiafoe's game is better suited to faster surfaces and he demonstrated his liking for quick courts on Monday as he saw off Joao Sousa in straight sets in Holland. The 35th-ranked American will be eyeing a deep run in Den Bosch in a bid to be seeded at Wimbledon and a win against Aussie journeyman Thompson looks likely.

Tiafoe is favourite, but it is worth taking the American giving up 2.5 games on the handicap against an opponent who struggled to see off lowly-ranked Tommy Paul in his first-round match.

In the women's draw, Greet Minnen should be backed to emerge victorious from a tight contest with the higher-ranked Russian Margarita Gasparyan.

Minnen is yet to make her mark in the WTA, but the Belgian is up to a career-high 139th in the world rankings and secured qualifying wins over former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki and Fiona Ferro before beating Mona Barthel in her first-round match.

Gasparyan claimed a fine victory over Viktoria Kuzmova in her Monday opener in Den Bosch - her first in a grass main-draw event - but she was let off the hook on two occasions by the Slovak who failed to serve out the match from 5-4 30-0 up in the second set and then again when blowing a 4-2 lead in the tiebreak.
