Betting preview

The stars are out in force in Canada this week as the US Open preparations are ramped up another notch with the Rogers Cup.

The women head to Toronto while the men are making their way to Montreal and some of the finest players on the planet are in action.

There is no Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Alexander Zverev but defending champion Daniil Medvedev still spearheads a competitive field, while all eyes will be on Polish world number one Iga Swiatek in Toronto as she bids to get back to winning ways.

Medvedev is 11-4 to successfully defend his Rogers Cup title and should be fancying his chances of following up after claiming silverware at the Los Cabos Open on Sunday.

However, the Russian only had to take care of Rinky Hijikata, Ricardas Berankis, Miomir Kecmanovic and Cameron Norrie to reign supreme in Mexico and tougher tests lie in wait in Canada.

Medvedev receives a first-round bye but could collide with Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios, who was also in final action in Washington last weekend, in the second round, while Denis Shapovalov and Alex de Minaur could be lurking in round three.

That makes him look too short in the betting and it could be best to target the bottom half of the draw, where Jannik Sinner is the man to follow.

The impressive Italian highlighted his quality when taking Djokovic to five sets in the Wimbledon quarter-final and he built on that when returning to action in the Croatian Open last week.

Sinner came from behind to defeat Carlos Alcaraz 6-7 6-1 6-1 in the final, which was the 20-year-old's seventh career title.

Things won’t be easy for Sinner with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Alcaraz also lining up in the bottom half of the draw.

However, the seventh seed appears to have Alcaraz’s measure, having also beat him at Wimbledon, while Tsitsipas is making his first appearance since an early exit at the All England Club.

Rublev was beaten by Yoshihito Nishioka in the semi-final in Washington last week, which leaves him with plenty to prove, and with a nice early draw Sinner represents the each-way value.

WTA Toronto

Many expect Swiatek to shrug off her Wimbledon disappointment and the prolific Pole is 13-5 to claim her seventh title of what has been a dominant 2022.

Swiatek had been on a 37-game winning streak before a third-round loss to Alize Cornet at SW19 but has subsequently been beaten early on home soil in Warsaw, which was also on her favourite surface of clay.

She is also in a star-studded first quarter which also includes Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Garbine Muguruza, Leylah Fernandez, Victoria Azarenka and Belinda Bencic, so is worth taking on.

The value could lie with Spanish fourth seed Paula Badosa, who looks well drawn in the bottom half.

The 24-year-old receives a first-round bye and there was plenty of promise in her run to the semi-final of the Silicon Valley Classic last time out, with her scalps including Cori Gauff.

Badosa is a big-game player who has won three titles on the WTA Tour and is more reliable than fellow seeded stars Jessica Pegula, Je?ena Ostapenko and Emma Raducanu, who are also in the third quarter, which makes a semi-final spot look there for taking.
