Alexander Zverev made the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters last season but the German’s Chinese adventure could be ended in the last 16 by ruthless Russian Andrey Rublev this time around.

Zverev was successful in straight sets in his first-round clash with French journeyman Jeremy Chardy but both sets were won in tiebreaks, with the world number six giving his odds-on backers a few scares.

The German is rightly favourite to follow up but he faces a tougher test against Rublev, who is slowly returning to somewhere near his best.

The Russian youngster reached the last eight of the US Open as a teenager two years ago but injuries have hampered his development and his performances have not been as consistent as he would have liked.

However, dominant wins in Shanghai over Borna Coric, runner-up here last year, and recent Tokyo Open finalist John Millman suggest he is in rude health and capable of springing a surprise.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer, a two-time winner in Shanghai, had few concerns against Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his curtain-raiser and he should be too good for David Goffin, who has lost six of their most recent seven meetings without taking a set.
