Sevastova’s hard hitting can see her into China final

Anastasija Sevastova can upset Julia Goerges and claim a place in the final of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.

The Latvian, whose compatriot Jelena Ostapenko won the French Open in June, has been playing some blinding tennis in the Chinese tournament and even though Goerges deserves a decent tournament triumph after a hugely consistent season, the German may have to give better to her hard-hitting rival.

In the second semi Ashleigh Barty, the favourite to lift the trophy, will play CoCo Vande­weghe in a close-looking contest.

Barty has enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season and should not be scared of any opponent, but Vandeweghe is a powerful hitter who may take time to be broken down by her opponent.

Juan Martin del Potro's hopes of a place in the ATP Finals in London took a bashing when he lost 6-4 6-7 6-4 to John Isner in the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

Rafael Nadal may also be a doubt for London after withdraw­ing from his scheduled last-eight clash with 300-1 Filip Krajinovic in Paris-Bercy with a knee injury.

Nadal had already done enough in Paris to secure a year-end number one ranking for the fourth time in his career.
