Semi-final preview

It is semi-final day in Cincinnati on Saturday and the pick of the matches sees world number one Daniil Medvedev renew his rivalry with Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas.

These two have previous so it could be a fiery exchange in the Ohio heat, but Medvedev’s hard-court credentials should eventually tell.

The Russian leads Tsitsipas 6-1 on the faster surface and was a four-set winner when they met in the semi-final of the Australian Open earlier this year.

But there is little juice in his price at 2-5 and there is better value to be had with British number one Cameron Norrie, who is 8-11, to get the better of Borna Coric.

Coric, who reached 12th in the world as a 21-year-old in 2018, has returned to form in style with wins over Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

However, Norrie has the winning habit and reaching the latter stages of competitions is becoming a regular theme, with the Brit now pursuing a fifth title in just over 12 months.

The world number 11 showed great character in his three-set triumph over rising Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final, a victory which means he has now lost only three of his last 17 matches.

And it is worth noting that those defeats came against Novak Djokovic, Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime, who had his home crowd cheering him on in Montreal.

In the women’s event, the semi-final showdown between Madison Keys and Petra Kvitova looks too tight to call, but Caroline Garcia appeals as an outsider against Aryna Sabalenka.

Former world number four Garcia has rediscovered her mojo this season, winning titles in Bad Homburg and Warsaw, and has lost only four of her 28 matches since mid-June.

The 28-year-old has beaten Maria Sakkari, Elise Mertens and Jessica Pegula in Cincinnati and could frustrate Sabalenka who, unlike her opponent, has beaten only one top-30 performer to get this far.

The big-hitting Belarusian has all the necessary weapons to go right to the top but she is wildly inconsistent and her style leaves her prone to racking up double faults and unforced errors.
