Garbine Muguruza has had mixed fortunes at the WTA finals, winning in straight sets against Jelena Ostapenko and losing in straight sets to Karolina Pliskova, but the Wimbledon champion can rediscover her best tennis when she faces Venus Williams in the final round of Red Group matches.

It is a straight shootout between the pair to qualify for the semi-finals and Muguruza may just have the edge in terms of fitness and power.

Williams lost 6-2 6-2 to Pliskova in her opening match before showing her battling qualities to defeat Ostapenko 7-5 6-7 7-5 on Tuesday.

But the American had to work hard in all three sets against Ostapenko and may be at a physical disadvantage to Muguruza, who has won both of their matches this year - 6-2 3-6 6-2 in the Rome quarter-finals and 7-5 6-0 in the Wimbledon final.

Roger Federer breezed past talented American teenager Frances Tiafoe in his first-round match at the Swiss Indoors and is a red-hot 1-14 favourite to make further progress by beating France's Benoit Paire.
