Taking on quick learner Matteo Berrettini did not work in the last eight of the Mercedes Cup, but the ploy may again be worth chancing when the Italian meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Stuttgart semi-finals.

Berrettini came in for good early support to post an away win against homeland battler Struff after overpowering Denis Kudla 6-3 6-3 in the quarters.

But while Berrettini is the reigning clay champ in Gstaad and Bucharest, the consistent Struff is arguably more deserving of a first main-tour title than anyone on the ATP Tour.

Berrettini is clearly adept on any terrain and he dismantled Nick Kyrgios and Karen Khachanov earlier this week. However, Struff has not dropped a set in wins over Denis Shapo­valov, Miomir Kecmanovic and Lucas Pouille and he may offer value.
