Daria Kasatkina is a two-time WTA St Petersburg Trophy semi-finalist but the young Russian may have to give way to her experienced compatriot Vera Zvonareva in Friday's quarter-final clash.

Zvonareva is past her best at 34 but the wildcard, who is a former world number two, has produced two excellent displays to see off Ekaterina Makarova and Julia Goerges to reach the last eight in Russia's second city.

A day of rest will have aided Zvonareva's recovery and the former Wimbledon finalist is serving and returning well enough to take down Kasatkina, who is yet to win a match this year.

The 21-year-old received a first-round bye due to her high ranking and then advanced to the quarter-finals after Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament with a shoulder injury.

She is a tricky opponent but often struggles against power players and Zvonareva will be able to put Kasatkina's serve under pressure from the beginning of the match - the veteran broke 2018 WTA ace leader Goerges's serve five times on Wednesday.

Bookmakers may be wrong to side with the younger player, who has been beaten by Kimberly Birrell, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Timea Bacsinszky this season, so odds-against quotes about Zvonareva look worth taking.

Recommendation
V Zvonareva
1pt 11-10 general
