Roger Federer was trimmed to 22-1 from 25-1 for the French Open after easing into the last 16 with a 6-3 6-1 7-6 victory over Caspar Ruud on day six of the clay-court major.

The Swiss veteran will next meet Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, who ended the run of Nicolas Mahut, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Federer coasted to a two-set lead over Ruud, although the 20-year-old Norwegian mounted a better defence in set three before experience told in a lengthy tiebreak.

Title favourite Rafael Nadal was taken to four sets by David Goffin, who was dismissed 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Women’s second seed Karolina Pliskova was dumped out of the singles 6-3 6-3 by red-hot Petra Martic.

Pliskova went to Paris full of hope after winning in Rome eight days before the main draw started at Roland Garros, but the big-serving Czech had no answer to Martic, a Croat who has overcome injury troubles to become a threat to anyone in all the majors.

The top-ranked player in the fourth quarter of the women’s draw, which is now wide open, is 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova, so whoever emerges from the third quarter will probably be a warm order to reach the final.
