Ante-post tournament favourites Spain begin their bid for Davis Cup glory when they take on Russia in Madrid but punters should tread with caution when it comes to the home team's hopes.

Rafael Nadal leads a strong side but the Majorcan failed to get out of his group at the ATP World Tour Finals last week and there’s every chance that he’s taking part only because of the location of the event.

Russia are without the services of Daniil Medvedev after the world number five withdrew on the eve of the tournament but Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev, both ranked in the top 25, are capable of troubling Nadal and Roberto Bautista Agut on hard courts.

Argentina face a Chile side who would prefer to be playing on clay, while France should have no problems against a Japan team missing Kei Nishikori.

Australia, led by Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur, are also fancied to make light work of Colombia but there are other, more competitive ties to concentrate on.

Kazakhstan have got next to no chance of winning the event but they can give themselves a chance of progressing from a group containing Great Britain and Holland by beating the Dutch on day two.

Mikhail Kukushkin is a solid singles player who is in better form than Holland’s Robin Haase, while Alexander Bublik was a finalist at the Chengdu Open in September.

The Dutch probably have the better doubles team but there are two singles rubbers to win in this best-of-three contest and that should hand the edge to the Kazakhs.
