Day ten preview

Nadal v Thiem

Rafael Nadal will be feeling pretty good after dumping out Nick Kyrgios and seeing fourth seed Daniil Medvedev exit the Australian Open, but the top seed could be vulnerable against improving Dominic Thiem.

Nadal remains one of the finest battlers to grace a tennis court, but he turns 34 this year and the first major of the season at Melbourne Park is his weakest.

Nadal still has Thiem’s measure on clay – he has defeated the Austrian in the last two French Open finals.

But this is only their second hard-court encounter and given that their first, at the 2018 US Open, went to a deciding set, there is hope for Thiem.

Nadal has performed better in New York than in Victoria and Thiem’s hard-court game may still be a shade underrated by the oddsmakers.

Wawrinka v A Zverev

Stan Wawrinka showed he is playing somewhere near his best when upending fourth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-2 2-6 4-6 7-6 6-2 in the last 16, but while that was a superb triumph a date with Alexander Zverev could be tougher for the Swiss ace.

Zverev has yet to drop a set in Melbourne and if he continues to perform the way he has done in the first four rounds, the German could go close to lifting his first major trophy.

Zverev leads their personal series 2-0 and looks well placed to improve that record.

Kontaveit v Halep

Anett Kontaveit is playing some of the best tennis of her career, but even that may not save the Estonian against Simona Halep.

The Wimbledon champion, seeded fourth and with coach Darren Cahill back in her corner, is likely to take a good deal of stopping this week and while Halep may still have to battle for victory she should find a way to win.

Muguruza v Pavlyuchenkova

This should be a cracking clash between two huge talents, but Pavlyuchenkova’s greater tendency to commit errors could be crucial.

Muguruza leads the Russia 4-0 in their completed matches and with the Spaniard looking like she has rediscovered her mojo on hard terrain, she looks the likelier victor.
