Day five preview

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer remain on course for an almighty Australian Open semi-final clash but while defending champion Djokovic should have few problems in round three, Federer will be wary of his date with John Millman.

Aussie battler Millman famously upended the Swiss legend in the 2018 US Open and it's likely that Federer, who has two wins of his own against the world number 47, will be better prepared for their second Grand Slam encounter.

Federer is 1-2 to defeat Millman in straight sets but the Japan Open finalist is playing well enough to be competitive.

Djokovic, who beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-1 6-2 in the Davis Cup finals in November, is 3-10 to account for Dan Evans’s conqueror in three sets.

Fucsovics v Paul

Marton Fucsovics has come in for support to continue his Australian Open charge after ousting Denis Shapovalov and Jannik Sinner in Melbourne, but the Hungarian powerhouse may find third-round opponent Tommy Paul a tougher proposition.

Paul, who had to try to qualify for Grand Slam tournaments for so long, gained a main-draw berth by right in the season's first major.

And the American has not let tournament organisers or his backers down with fine wins over Leonard Mayer and 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov.

Fucsovics pretty much knows only one way to play and that is to overpower his opponents, but Paul is a clever operator and could get chances to add to his victory over the world number 66 in a clay-court Challenger event in Rome in 2106.

World number 90 Paul is value with a handicap start of a set and a half against the higher-ranked Fucsovics and he is also worth a punt to progress in the singles.

Osaka v Gauff

Naomi Osaka ended Cori Gauff's US Open hopes when dismantling the American 6-3 6-0 in New York in August but things could be closer in their second meeting.

Osaka was quick to console Gauff after their opening encounter, but while that match resulted in an official mauling the American will know more about what to expect from the Australian Open champion on this occasion.

Gauff deserves credit for ousting legendary veteran Venus Williams and Sorana Cirstea at Melbourne Park and she could make life difficult for Osaka.

Other matches

There's a fascinating clash in prospect between in-form duo Alison Riske and Julia Goerges.

German Goerges leads their personal series 2-1 but Riske won their most recent meeting and the American is seeded this year.

It could be close but Riske may be the more progressive of the pair.
