Marin Cilic to win ATP Sofia Open

Tournament preview

Marin Cilic is without a title on the ATP Tour since reigning supreme at the Queen's Club two years ago, but there have been signs of a revival in recent appearances and the classy Croat may return to the winner's enclosure in the Sofia Open, which continues on Monday.

Ongoing knee injuries have halted Cilic's progress in recent years but at his best he would carry this opposition in Bulgaria - where day one saw just two main-draw matches played - and his draw couldn't have been much kinder.

Cilic is an 18-time winner on the ATP Tour, which includes Grand Slam success at the US Open in 2014, yet he is a 10-1 shot despite now competing on a more regular basis.

Cilic may not be the force of old but says he is starting to feel fitter and stronger and that appeared to be the case on his last start at the Paris Masters, where he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets in the first round before being knocked out by Ugo Humbert having also gone the distance.

There appeared to be no fluke about his win over second seed Auger-Aliassime, who also makes the trip to Sofia and would be on course to clash with Cilic again at the quarter-final stage.

Cilic would be fancied to navigate his way past wildcard Jonas Forejtek and Richard Gasquet in the early stages to set up another duel with the Canadian youngster, who is joint-favourite alongside Alex de Minaur for title supremacy.

But Cilic, 32, has without doubt landed in the softer half of the draw. If reaching the semi-finals, he should have little to fear from Jan-Lennard Struff or Vasek Pospisil, suggesting he offers plenty of each-way value.

The top half is far tougher to unearth with Denis Shapovalov, De Minaur, Jannik Sinner and last season's runner-up Marton Fucsovics all capable of troubling the judge.
