Preview

John Millman will have been buoyed by reaching the Japan Open final on Sunday and it’s possible that the spirited Australian could kick on after receiving praise from Tokyo champ Novak Djokovic.

Millman has always been a reliable performer who almost always gives of his best but he may struggle to dominate against Guido Pella, who has enjoyed a successful season on a variety of surfaces.

Pella could be ready to return to winning form after a recent quieter period which has seen him lose to opponents such as Pablo Carreno Busta and Nikoloz Basilashvili.

There was little shame in those first-round losses and it’s also possible that Millman, who had a busy week in Tokyo where he came through qualifying to contest the title match, may need an easier week in Beijing and struggle to justify his special exemption tournament entry.

In the WTA Linz Open, Kristina Mladenovic, who has shown signs of stepping things up of late, could be suited to the indoor conditions in Austria.

The Frenchwoman meets Katerina Siniakova and while the Czech is the higher-rated performer, Mladenovic has been an underachiever for much of her career so could be going in under the radar of the oddsmakers.
